1 March 1954 – The US detonated its largest thermonuclear device, over bikini atoll on the 1 March 1954. The BRAVO test. 15 megatons, it caused a 250 feet deep crater a mile cross, and a fireball for two miles from the test site. Radiation fallout spread hundreds of miles, causing the first human casualties from the H bomb era. 28 Americans, 236 Marshall islanders and the crew of a Japanese fishing boat were exposed.
